For core BMX heads, the incorporation of a scooter under the Mongoose umbrella was tough to swallow, it being a much more accessible and cheaper product which wasn’t consistent with the essence of BMX, the spirit of the sport. Interestingly, attitudes towards scooters are similarly harboured to this day, with scooters (albeit in a different mongoose excursion form) continuing to polarise people and continuing to be the easy option, the low hanging fruit. The sky was the limit for BMX and no one had a better grasp on that than Mongoose. Pacific cycle made even more this year so anyone that wants this bike ? My rough estimate, there is around little over 6000 units sold since 2019.
His original design for a guitar, the Melody Burner, has been played by Billy Gibbons, Sheryl Crow, and others. Mongoose also sells the Legion 18 for children between 3-feet-8-inches to 4-feet-8-inches. Gear-obsessed editors choose every product we review.
Are you an adrenaline junkie and all about adventure and stunts? At Ivanhoe Cycles, we are passionate about bikes and bring you an amazing BMX bike range at great prices. MADISON, Wis. (BRAIN) — Dick’s Sporting Goods will begin carrying Mongoose bikes this month, supplanting GT Bicycles, which ended its agreement with the box-store giant at the end of 2023. The Mongoose Legion L60 Bike is a good entry level BMX bike for someone on the slightly taller side. RECO (Racer Engineering Company) was a wholly owned manufacturing division created for insurance purposes to be separate from BMX Products, Inc, even though RECO was always produced in-house.
This leads to the feeling of sitting or standing “on the bike” rather than “in the bike.” Novice riders will likely find this feeling to be remarkably uncomfortable. When in doubt, gravitate toward one of the 26-inch offerings or even a 29. “Millions of Americans have joined the cycling community since the pandemic — the largest portion in the off-road segment — and the new Mongoose range at Dick’s supports future growth in ridership.” Resurrecting the early scooter concept and improving through the inclusion of BMX style design and technology, the ‘Mini Scoot’ was an overnight success and alleged to have sold in the hundreds and thousands of units. Hitting the market in 1986, the rumour around the scooter is that a Mongoose employee overproduced ‘Moose Goose’ head tubes and thereby sparked the idea for a scooter which takes advantage of a higher headtube.
Under the production name ‘BMX Products’, 1975 saw the very first batch of heli-arc welded frames which again, were designed with the BMX biker in mind. Scott Breithaupt of SE Bikes and literal pioneer of BMX fame, speaks to this topic in an interview with BMX Ultra, here. As part of this interview it is noted that the date of the very first BMX race was November 1970. BMX is arguably the most diverse and inclusive form of cycling, encompassing coastal cultures, urban stunt riding, and hard-nosed rural competition in a single, loosely drawn concept. Starting in 1969 with repurposed Schwinns, the sport quickly refined and expanded its riding options to include everything from 12-pound terrors for six-year-old expert-category riders to the 29-inch “bike life” cruisers beloved of the Brooklyn wheelie crowd. Contrary to what we say above, some bike life riders say that 29-inch wheels are a great intro to the culture.
The 80’s are back, baby – live it up on the iconic Mongoose Supergoose. Classic Mongoose fans rejoice – the California Special BMX bike is back! Based on the original 1983 design, the new California Special is great for turning heads around the neighborhood or at the track. It features a Hi-ten steel Mongoose frame built on original geometry of a legend for superior performance and durability. The single speed drivetrain is easy to use and maintain, while the DiaCompe MX brake kit delivers super-fast, reliable stopping power.
For the Mongoose brand and its long history, the role of BMX bandits further improved the iconic status with the chrome ‘Supergoose’ model (with blue wheels and accessories) being ridden by one of the central characters ‘Goose’. Young ‘Goose’ is joined by another BMX bike enthusiast ‘P.J.’ who one day have a run in with a young trolley collector by the name of ‘Judy’ and embark on a journey to help her tally funds to buy a BMX bike. From here, the film centers on the trio as they find themselves embroiled (unintentionally) in a series of shady situations as propelled by a couple of halfwit goons attempting to rob a bank. As earlier eluded, ‘Judy’ mongoose bmx was played by a teenage Kidman, emerging out of a field of 200 audition hopefuls, Nicole was noted as having a remarkable ability to understand, interpret and adapt to a script. Shifting back to Skip, with his mechanical engineering knowledge and in working as an automotive rim designer at the time, the design and production of the first BMX specific wheelset (i.e. ‘MotoMag One’), the aforementioned problem had met its solution. Surely enough, purposefully crafted design was met with demand as the ‘MotoMag One’ was soon accepted by the BMX community as a superior product thanks to the trellis shape, ribbed spokes and light-weight alloy.
The “bike life” movement, primarily led and nourished by SE Racing and a group of increasingly well-known riders from Harlem, Philly, and elsewhere, has caught the attention of all the major BMX players, including long-time industry heavyweight GT. The 29-inch Street Performer is a big-wheeled beauty with a retro front triangle frame, double wall rims, and fully sealed bearings. These specs are just a little better than the run-of-the-bike-life mill. From the perspective of present day Mongoose, the machine grinds on.
After a couple years at the company and having progressed as far as the role would allow, a resignation was in order and the scene was set for Magoo’s next move, taking up a marketing and product management position at Mongoose. If mongoose continue to sell the bike, this can become a honda civic of old school bmx, a cheap, good looking bike that you can actually upgrade and improve it’s performance and it’s fun, i have more fun customizing this bike than any other bike… Because unlike a hutch, or a gt, i could care less if i mix brands around…
After a significant team revamp in 2010, the current roster is seriously stacked and a big reason as to the ongoing success. For example, the freestyle team is spearheaded by some of the craziest and most prolific riders on the circuit, including olympian Pat Casey, Kevin Peraza, Mykel Larrin, Greg Illingworth and Ben Wallace. And in a similar stroke of genius to the hiring of Magoo as team manager, the current TM (Leigh Ramsdell) is also a legend of the game and someone with a deep understanding of what makes BMX so awesome. Beyond that, Mongoose are still supporting bikers in all forms (particularly racing, freestyle and mountain bikes), contributing to jams and events as well as producing some of the raddest products available.
