Considering there is an aluminum alloy suspension fork on the front of this bike, I’m glad the motor isn’t too powerful or it miay negatively impact travel and perhaps even weaken this part. For that ride, just getting the feel of the bike, I headed for a local paved rail-trail. The bike offers a seven-speed gear range, with a derailleur and double-trigger shifter from Microshift. The rear hub motor offers assist levels of 0-5, with 0 being no assist and 5 being the maximum assist. On the mostly flat trail, the bike rolled easily enough that I could have pedaled its whole length without using any assist at all, just shifting the gears to accommodate the gentle rise and fall of the path.
So to schwinn dealers offer a full-size electric bike with otherwise nice commuter features yet with such a small battery is a bit surprising. And with a top speed of 20 mph (32 km/h) combined with both throttle and pedal assist functionality, this Class 2 e-bike will help you fly around the city quickly and effortlessly (if you rely on the throttle). The Schwinn Coston CE is very much a commuter electric bike, but it’s not one of those thin-wheeled messenger e-bikes.
But it’s one of the least expensive ones you can buy from a bike company. Either way, all you need to do is to connect the battery to a standard household outlet with the included charger. The middle power/enter button turns the bike on while holding it. The battery has to be on before turning the bike on which got me the first time I tried. That being said, the small-ish 250W motor isn’t going to be a powerhouse on hills. I think the battery built into the bottom tube looks cool. Most ebikes just have a big battery hanging off the bottom tube. Putting the Marshall together takes about 30 minutes and isn’t difficult. It might take you a bit longer if you aren’t familiar with ebikes. It’s still lower than many mountain bikes making it easier to get on and off, especially on awkward spots on the trail. A small, easy to use console is on the left side of the handlebar.
