Looking at buying a $600 mech, I love the idea that individual parts of the mech can be replaced if they get damaged, that it will run with almost any shifter, and that I can swap the cage out to run short or long so it can be used on more or less any bike. The shifting itself is nothing to write home about, but it works well every time. You can drop half a hyper mountain bike cassette at once or make single shifts with the expected precision, and it works, but not as nicely as SRAM electronic shifting. I have never NEEDED anything to work as nicely as SRAM electronic shifting in horrible conditions. I’m normally a fan of flex everywhere but in this instance, the super stiff BEAST parts kept the bike feeling positive and surprisingly efficient on climbs. The Hyper E-Ride City electric bike is commonly hyper bicycles referred to as the electric bike from Walmart, as it sold almost exclusively at Walmart locations. The bikes battery lacks range, as the battery can only run for up to 20 miles or 1 hour.
The XPeak takes the form of a typical adventure-style fat tire electric bike. Tern is renowned for building high-quality electric bikes that double down on utility features. The newly updated Tern HSD is the company’s more affordable utility e-bike, offering many features you’ll find on its higher end GSD but at a price that more riders can stomach. It’s a perfect commuter e-bike for someone that wants high quality parts like that German mid-drive motor with 90Nm of torque, hydraulic disc brakes, bright LED lights, included fenders, rear rack, and a very comfortable saddle.
To get there, that meant a relatively low-power motor and a smaller battery were required. But for the folks that ride these types of bikes, a big motor and heavy battery probably aren’t on their wishlist anyway. Instead, a simple extra boost, as if you’ve always got a tailwind, helps augment your own pedaling. The high-capacity battery and powerful motor also make for sprightly acceleration and longer than hyper bicycles average rides, so you’ll have enough power to ride all day. A gravel bike has become a go-to bike that works for everything, where everything discounts anything that the SRD was designed to do. Overall, I increasingly rode a fairly niche bike relative to my location for normal stuff and having a great time. I was overbiking for sure, but simultaneously, I was pushing myself to ride new things rather than pushing my fitness as I’d expected. All the while being simple and, in my experience, maintenance-free with four sealed bearings between the swing arm and the frame.
