The Royal Gourmet GD401 4-Burner Folding Gas Grill and Griddle is marketed as a semi-portable grill, lacking the clever trolley feature found on the . Nonetheless, it can be folded down and easily transported in the trunk of a decent-sized car. However, the combination of a grill and griddle (with no option of changing out the griddle for another grill) may not suit everyone and could seriously limit the cooking area if you are cooking for a family. It also lacks a lid, which would otherwise enable it to maintain a consistent temperature that a lidded grill can provide. We are traveling around the country, so we have to set it up and break it down frequently, and it’s so easy.
The grill has an area where you can put veggies so they won’t fall through the grates. We have cooked burgers, wings, grilled potatoes, weber natural gas grill sweet potatoes, winter squash, and shish kabobs with onions and mushrooms. Weber suggests cleaning the cooking grates after every use.
Even if you clean the grill thoroughly afar each use I would still recommend the Cargo Protector cover. Naturally, the hot dogs and beef hamburgers were done before the turkey burgers. This is where having multiple burners would have been a nice feature. It would have allowed me to keep the food warm while the turkey burgers cooked at a higher temp. Once I put two and two together, it lifted up with little effort.
The 49-pound Weber Traveler is a large, heavy-weight standing grill, which makes it difficult to compete against the more petite grills in our lineup. However, the designers at Weber truly put a lot of thought into the ease of transport by including a mechanism that allows for a slow lowering into a compact position. Combined this with durable, all-weather wheels, the Traveler is relatively easy to load into a pickup truck or even a compact vehicle. There are plenty of older portable gas grills on the market, but in my opinion, they’ve either been too small or inconvenient to transport.
