At the close of the 1920s, the stock market crash decimated the American motorcycle industry, taking Excelsior-Henderson with it. Arnold, Schwinn, & Co. (as it remained until 1967) was on the verge of bankruptcy. With no buyers, Excelsior-Henderson motorcycles were discontinued in 1931.[5] Ignaz’s son, Frank W. W. Schwinn returned to Chicago and in 1933 introduced the Schwinn B-10E Motorbike, actually a youth’s bicycle designed to imitate a motorcycle. 21-speed twist shifters provide quick, precise gear changes on the trail.
Hardtail
Hardtail mountain bikes have front suspension and a rigid frame. Hardtail bikes are lighter and more agile than their full suspension counterparts, but they’re not as well suited on ultra bumpy, rough terrain. By 1990, other United States bicycle companies with reputations for excellence in design such as Trek, Specialized, and Cannondale had cut further into Schwinn’s market. Unable to produce bicycles in the United States at a competitive cost, by the end of 1991 Schwinn was sourcing its bicycles from overseas manufacturers. This in turn led to further inroads by domestic and foreign competitors.
However, the thickened shock forks bring the crown closer to make it look more appealing. The inclined bar in the Boundary’s frame provides two installation areas where a kettle rack (drink holder) can be mounted. This simple and practical feature is generally not seen on bikes at this price level. As a physically-fit rider I found the gear range to be more than adequate, and I had no problem compensating for the heavy weight of the bike on longer rides.
The 100mm fork offers little more than shock absorption and is not tunable beyond the simple lockout. It’s good for taking the sting off some hits, and in my opinion better than a rigid fork, but that’s about it. Over the years, Schwinn has empowered millions of people, schwinn tricycle earning a special place in the hearts and minds of generations of riders.
