Over the years, Schwinn has empowered millions of people, earning a special place in the hearts and minds of generations of riders. Sometime in the 1970’s, the Schwinn Chicago factory was organized by the United schwinn tricycle Auto Workers union, who felt that bicycle factory workers should be paid on the same scale as automotive workers. Unfortunately, the realities of the marketplace didn’t agree, and Schwinn closed the factory, transferring most production to Japan (Panasonic) and Taiwan (Giant). Schwinn also built a factory in Greenville, Mississippi, but it didn’t last, and even bought a factory in Hungary, but the deal fell through, and Schwinn never imported any Hungarian bikes to the U.S.
Unlike its progenitors, the Klunker proved incapable of withstanding hard off-road use, and after an unsuccessful attempt to reintroduce the model as the Spitfire 5, it was dropped from production. A stronger drive train and chain make for easy maintenance while delivering an authentic riding experience indoors. Schwinn was soon sponsoring a bicycle racing team headed by Emil Wastyn, who designed the team bikes, and the company schwinn bicycles competed in six-day racing across the United States with riders such as Jerry Rodman and Russell Allen. In 1938, Frank W. Schwinn officially introduced the Paramount series. Developed from experiences gained in racing, Schwinn established Paramount as their answer to high-end, professional competition bicycles. The Paramount used high-strength chrome-molybdenum steel alloy tubing and expensive brass lug-brazed construction.
In 1939, Schwinn even produced a Hollywood bicycle model, one of the first to be specifically designed for and marketed to women. In 1938, Schwinn christened
the top-of-the-line lightweight bicycle the Paramount. The Paramount was destined to be an iconic product but the line was never
very profitable. Frank Schwinn understood that the Paramount was a market leader that would set a high standard for all Schwinn adult bikes.
In the 1940s
he recruited Hollywood and television stars to promote Schwinn as the best
bicycles in the world. The idea of moving towards dedicated bicycle dealers was
reinforced by a visit of Ray Burch and his marketing team to a bike shop in California owned by George Garner that
was selling Schwinn’s like hotcakes. A World War II veteran living in California,
he had purchased a shop that sold a wide variety of products including bicycles. He got tired of selling model airplanes and other
nickel and dime items. The visiting Schwinn
marketing team liked what they saw and took the idea of dedicated Schwinn
dealers back to Chicago to sell to the boss. With a line of quality bicycles and a marketing strategy
fine-tuned to consumer demand in place, during the late 1940s Schwinn was off
and running.
New models for
adults called the Varsity and Continental had been developed in the early 1960s
but with their dropped bars were not very popular. All Schwinn AC indoor bikes come standard with Double Link pedals with SPD and toe-clip combinations to accommodate both cycling cleats and regular athletic shoes. The bikes are also compatible with the Schwinn Triple Link pedal upgrade.
Schwinn
eventually decided to produce its high-quality bicycles in the Greenville factory
and low-quality bikes in Asia. This was a reasonable strategy and similar to
one being followed Trek. The Schwinn
family bicycle company was very strong for two generations. The third generation Schwinn manager Frank W.
Schwinn did not have the drive of his father.
Only 3 percent of family businesses are still alive and
kicking by the fourth generation (Zellweger, Nason, and Nordvist 2012). Edward
Schwinn, Jr. was a fourth-generation president of a family business. The 1982 film ET (ExtraTerrestrial) illustrates the intensity
of the BMX craze.
This range has more of a focus on speed than the cruiser or bike path range, with flat handlebars and a more fitness-orientated riding position. This feature, attractive to older riders, soon found its way to other Schwinn models, especially those intended for senior citizens.
