As electric bikes become more popular, many people are adopting the term “analog” bike to differentiate between motorized and traditional bicycles. While many of the features found on particular styles of e-bikes are the same in the analog world, a few motor or battery-specific details are different. Class 2 e-bikes also have a top motor speed of 20mph (although it is possible to ride them faster if your legs are strong enough). Like class 1, they also have a pedal assist option with different levels of power, depending on your preference. E-bikes that fall into the class 2 category are usually allowed in bike lanes and multi-use paths, but there are exceptions in certain states.
Torque sensors measure how hard you pedal using a strain gauge and deliver the appropriate power for the rider’s chosen setting. Another way to check your leg extension is to put your foot on the pedal and see if you can lower your heel below the axle of the pedal on the downstroke. If you can push your heel a little further than the axle, that’s often an optimum position in terms of efficiency and comfort. I think the rear “fender” needs more of a “seatback” on it to make it work. The one I built isn’t nearly as fast, but I was able to drag race a V6 Dodge Charger and stay ahead of it until roughly 30 mph. I agree, the reduced frontal area is everything until you get into velomobiles and a low CD and a reduced frontal area. Motocykes were VERY goofy and the concept of replacing fairing on a children’s bicycle whenever they dropped their bike was probably a nonstarter for parents. I ended up with an English style bike at one point in high school.
When you begin to pedal, the motor provides power, but the output usually needs to be manually adjusted using the controls on the handlebar. Some cadence sensors are a bit “smarter” because they can huffy bikes count pedal rotations (but still do not sense how hard you are pedaling) to adjust power output automatically. Pedal-assisted power delivery options include a torque sensor or a cadence sensor.
