Even assembling the Sundome 6 solo was a smooth process, which took less than 10 minutes from start to finish at a leisurely pace. And while Coleman attaches the instructions to the inside of the storage bag, we still think it’s a good idea to do a dry run in your backyard before heading out on a trip. Despite its inexpensive price tag and overall lack of features, the is a highly durable camping tent that should have no problem standing up to years of use. The bathtub floor is made of a thick, tarp-like material, and the body and mesh don’t feel in the least bit fragile.
I can see it being easy to form cracks and break, although in over a year of use I haven’t done either as of yet. I still carry materials to make a repair though, just in case. I haven’t got caught in a strong storm yet in this tent, but I imagine it will be easy for the wind to blow the tent in on itself because of the poles. The low wide profile and included guylines hold up well in the wind, and the tent floor has a tub design. As long as you can avoid a tear or puncture, you should stay dry. However, it isn’t the design that is at risk — it is the construction.
The Sundome Tent, on the other hand, has only 2 mesh walls. I also really love the door pocket here by the side, where I could stuff the door fabric in when the door is open. I have not only the Coleman 4-Person Skydome Tent, but also the 6-Person Sundome Tent, the 2-Person Sundome Tent, and in this blog post, I’ll go through all the differences between these tents.
Although sleeves do make it easier for one person to erect the tent, they tend to wear out with age. The poles lock into the corners using a pin-and-ring setup. This method isn’t particularly high-tech compared to many other tents, and it does have the potential to slip out, but we did not encounter any issues with this tent specifically.
The tent would work for four people in an emergency, otherwise the tent is just large enough for the both of us, a small carry-on travel bag to keep our clothes dry, and coleman screen tent a queen size air mattress. My one complaint in this area is the flimsy fiberglass tent poles. I’m not a fiberglass hater, but these are a little on the thin side.

With two people there is enough room to set up a queen size inflatable mattress, and still have room for extra gear you may want to store in the tent with you. There is a mesh gear pocket to store things like you wallet and phone in to keep them off the ground. You’ll also find a zippered opening near the door to run an electrical cord through so you can run a fan, or C-PAP machine in my case.
For us, the combination of increased weather protection and nicer materials make the more expensive Meramac 6 well worth considering. Another Kelty tent to have on your radar is their Tallboy 6. It’s a step up in price from the Discovery above at $230, but you do get a number of upgrades, including a lighter weight (14 lbs. 1 oz.), taller peak height (72 in.), and smaller packed size. The Kelty uses slightly higher-quality materials than the Sundome, but we find it hard to justify spending more for less space and similar overall performance. If there is one area where the 6 let us down the most, it certainly would be weather protection (or lack thereof).
