How does this Coleman 10-Person Instant Tent compare to other similar tents though? Well, here’s a blog post where I bought, tested and compared 6 of the best 10-person tents. Also, instant tents have a much bigger packed size than regular tents of the same size. And if you’re the type that doesn’t like a single spot of light when you’re sleeping at night, well, you’re in luck. With all its windows closed, this Coleman 10-Person Instant Dark Room Tent is almost pitch black, even though there are still street lights from the outside. If I were being nitpicky, I would say that there’s a little bit of light seeping in through the gap between the roof and the rainfly, and also from the bathtub flooring at the bottom of the tent.
I know for sure that I would not go to the Alps without a fly, we have a lot of rain there and it can last for hours. This tent is a single-layer type and this is the only similarity with winter tents which are usually (but not always) single-layer structures. But do not even think of using this tent in a winter environment; this is a tool for very mild weather conditions and for summer mainly. This tent is quite heavy, you have 36.3 lb (16.5 kg) here. The packed size is not so impressive either, you have a carry bag which is roughly 47 x 10 inches (120 x 25 cm). So, you will need a car or any other means of transport, and the tent can be used at places with a car access.
The Cabin is the perfect kids’ tent, parent tent, or gear tent, but you only get to choose one. At 56 sq ft, you can fit two twin air mattresses with about a foot of hallway left or fill the entire tent wall to wall with a full and a twin. The Cabin wasn’t built for four, but you could make it work in a pinch. The door only opens halfway, a disappointing feature found in other Coleman tents. With 3 children, we like to spread out and store our gear inside the tent to protect it from the weather and little critters that may get curious. Poles are integrated into the tent so there are no poles to snap together, insert, etc, etc.
A common problem users face is not following the recommended cleaning instructions. To clean your tent, use mild soap and lukewarm water, gently scrubbing any stains or dirt. Always ensure the tent is completely dry before storing to prevent mold or mildew. To ensure maximum stability, one common issue users face is incorrectly setting up the tent. Make sure to properly stake out all corners and guy lines, ensuring they are taut and secure.
The windows are a truly great feature, but they are the places where you might expect water passing through the vertical zippers sections. This is again something very useful; so you have two doors with different designs, one is with an inverted T-shape zipper and the other is like a D-shape. Both are with panels and mesh, so you can have windows on the doors as well. This is a bit disappointing part, there are only 2 small mesh pockets for storage.
The downside of this design is that the panels must be closed when it is raining. In such situations, this tent will not be a very pleasant place, you do not have coleman sundome mesh on the ceiling as typical for summer tents with a separate fly. Here, on vertical zippers, you have double flaps, plus Velcro tabs which keep them in place.
All of these heavy-duty materials add a great deal to the weight—at nearly 25lb, this is the heaviest tent in our 2021 review. However, this was not a bother to us, as this tent really only needs to be transported from the car to the impact pad, and we’d rather heft a few extra pounds than sacrifice durability. There’s no included footprint with this tent, and we’d recommend purchasing either a 9’x9’ or 10’x10’ footprint, which unfortunately is not offered by Coleman. You can also save quite a bit of money by opting for a tarp instead. These will run you anywhere from $10-20, depending upon your desired level of quality. The Instant Tent 6 is also lacking a couple of other features that would help it compete with several similar tents.
Taking down the Coleman 10-Person Tent and then packing it up takes slightly more than 5 minutes for 2 people, and about ~10 minutes on my own, excluding washing and drying, of course. After, secure the 6 s-hooks of the rainfly to the 6 loops on the base of the tent. Lastly Coleman appear to have teamed up with Realtree to market a new camouflage tent. Available in two versions the Realtree XTRA 4 looks to be exactly the same as the Standard Evanston model, the only difference been the colors.
This is also a 3-season tent with huge windows designed for comfort, and here again, you have both good and bad sides due to this, more below.
