Set up camp in a compact, yet spacious tent with the Coleman® Sundome® 4-Person Dome Tent. If it rains, the WeatherTec™ system with its patented welded floors and inverted seams will help you stay dry. A ground vent and two windows increase air circulation to help you stay cool and comfortable. The compact dome shape stands up to wind, and you’ll get extra weather protection from a door awning and an included rainfly. Setup is simple with snag-free, continuous pole sleeves. Inside, there’s enough room to stretch out on a queen-sized airbed, and storage pockets help to keep small items organized.
So I’ve spent 12 nights in the tent and with a good steady rain on 4 nights and no leaks yet. Atlantic Rigging Supply offers the highest quality marine hardware for both marine and non-marine end users. Our products are designed to withstand the harshest conditions, have the highest working loads in their field and are made from the best materials available. The bathtub floor that comes with welded corners and inverted should keep small rain showers out of the tent.
6-Person Skydome™ Camping Tent – EvergreenWith a quick setup in under 5 minutes, the Skydome™ Camping Tent lets you enjoy more time with friends and family on the next camping trip. The Coleman Sundome is super easy to set up including the rainfly. It took us less than 10 minutes with two people to get everything together and ready for our use, which meant more time for enjoying ourselves. The rain fly on this tent only uses one pole down the center making it easier to set up and less parts that could potentially break.
The panels provide excellent views on cloudless nights, but these will be lost with the attached rainfly. Although there is only one doorway on the Sundome, it is quite large and should allow for easy entry and exit for one person at a time. There’s no room divider for the Sundome, nor is there a vestibule. We can certainly live without the former, but the lack of a vestibule means that there’s no mudroom to store your dirty stuff, which can come in particularly handy when the weather gets wet. The pole that holds up the rainfly offers very little protection from the rain outside the tent, really only enough to keep it from getting inside the door.
The same day I planned to find a place to pitch the tent, a norovirus hit 13 of our 53 scouts, so the remainder of the day was spent making rounds checking on the kids. I’ll spare you the glorious details, but picture the pie eating contest scene from Stand coleman screen tent By Me and that’ll give you a pretty good idea. Due to the outbreak, the camp closed and we went home the next day. We bought a replacement pole for the tent when we got home, but have since turned this into the backup/extra tent for when we take friends.
The larger poles can easily be replaced but the ones that were used for the rain fly couldn’t be replaced. Using our back yard as a test site, I proceeded to test its set-up time which is set at 10 minutes. Silke watched from the edge of the deck as I deftly maneuvered my way around the laid out tent and proceeded to stake coleman ice chest off the corners. It was very similar to our old tent in layout and design so I had an unfair advantage to setting it up the first time. All packed up, the Sundome 6 weighs 16.6lb, and the packed size of its travel bag is 28”x13”x8”. Once you’ve put together the main tent, adding the rainfly is a fairly simple process.
The downside, the poles that support it are made of what appears to be a fiberglass material that with age have started to disintegrate. Excellent for Scouting, camping, and overnights at the beach. Coleman is a trustworthy name in camping that has been around for many years.
A popular choice among car campers and festival-goers for years, Coleman’s Sundome 6 (also known simply as “the Coleman Dome Tent”) is offered at a bargain-basement price that is tough to match. With enough floor area to fit two queen-sized mattresses, 6 feet of headroom at the center, and good ventilation, it checks many of the boxes that people are looking for in a tent. It’s not the most weather-worthy or well-built design, but it’s an excellent value for what you get. Below we break down the Sundome 6’s overall performance. To see how it stacks up against the competition, see our article on the best camping tents.
Although the base of the tent is strong enough on its own for basic campsites, I recommend also purchasing a camping tarp for your tent to sit on. This was immensely helpful in keeping our tent clean when it rained and was an extra layer of protection for keeping the tent in good condition. The rods holding up the tent are decently strong, but we didn’t face any major wind during our stay to comment on how it would withstand very windy weather.
I did have a bit of mist blow in through the ends, since the rain fly doesn’t actually come too far down the tent. As I said earlier, I haven’t had this tent in a bad storm yet, I think heavy winds would possibly blow more rain in and make water inside the tent an issue. Sure, maybe four really good friends or close family members will fit in the tent, if they are below average size. If there are four people in the tent, there will be absolutely zero space for anything else.
