We found the fitting system to be really effective and comfortable with a good amount of adjustability. Perhaps due to the extra protection, the Bell XR isn’t the lightest in class – a medium has a claimed weight of 285g while our large test helmet tipped that scales at 317g. Bell’s XR helmet is aimed at cyclists who like to ride both on and off-road and require a helmet to cover both terrains. At 280 grams, the S-Works Prevail 3 is light but certainly not lightest in class. But for those who ride often in hot climates the supreme ventilation is likely to make it worthy of consideration.

At around 27lbs the Core weighs in somewhere in the middle of the scale that you would expect for a 120mm trail blaster but it feels nippy and easy to spin up to speed thanks to the lightweight rims and fast rolling tyres. The Core range is based around a 6061 aluminium tube set that is butted where needed with some gentle manipulation to ovalise the down tube as it meets the seat tube at the bottom bracket shell. There are strengthening gussets where the down tube and top tube meet the tapered head tube and the seat stays are an old school wishbone style, the lack of a bridge gives ample mud clearance. With its proportions, and tapered headset it can have many higher end components added the bike to make it comparable to bikes much more expensive than it is. This includes new forks, better derailleurs, better handlebars and so much more.

My friend has one of these bikes and I’m trying to trade him tires lol. Well thought out geometry, good looks and great handling make the Genesis Core 26.4 stand out as a great bike at a good price. Kit wise the Genesis is sensibly specced, Shimano Deore takes care of transmission duties with a SLX rear derailleur, brakes are Deore too. Genesis are a British brand that have been building decent bikes and a decent reputation so I was looking forward to a chance to see if the positive buzz about the company and their bikes was well earned. Let me end this with that fact that the Incline was a good $75 cheaper, and offers an awesome bang for the buck!
Although it’s from Shimano, the 3×7 shifters and derailleurs have more than enough slop that your LBS may simply refuse to work on it, knowing they will never be able to get it to shift smoothly and consistently. At the entry-level, the Delta is an aluminium frame and carbon fork road bike with endurance geometry that comes with rim brakes and provides a comfortable ride. Ortlieb says the handlebar pack and seat pack offer ample storage for things like sleeping bags, clothing, or camping gear. Padding makes a helmet more comfortable but also helps to wick sweat away from your head. An ideal road bike helmet design will feature padding that can be removed for washing and replacement. The style and thickness of padding varies between helmets, so again, it’s worth trying a few models on to see which work the best for you.
Despite its closed off silhouette, the deep channelling and vents under the brow keep your noggin cool and your sunglasses free of sunscreen infused sweat. Sure, anything that gets you riding is a plus, but as mentioned before you get what you pay for. After 100 miles my rear hub became so loose that it was pretty much un-ride-able. My only concern is not knowing how to replace the pads on my front break, like most models, I have a disc break in front.
There’s a reason bikes with fully functional brakes and shifters cost more than typical department store and X-Mart bikes. You don’t need an expensive bike to enjoy cycling, but don’t be fooled into thinking a cheap one is worth the money either.
